Heat Is a Tire’s Worst Enemy
Sacramento summers regularly push past 100 degrees, and the pavement gets far hotter than the air. That heat is one of the leading causes of tire blowouts, and the danger peaks exactly when families are taking summer road trips. Understanding how heat damages tires, and what to watch for, can prevent a dangerous failure on the freeway.
How Heat Causes Blowouts
Heat affects tires in two ways. First, hot air expands, raising the pressure inside the tire. Second, the rubber itself gets hotter and weaker as it flexes against scorching pavement at freeway speed. When a tire is already underinflated, worn, or old, that extra heat and stress can be the final straw that causes a sudden blowout. Underinflation is especially dangerous, because a low tire flexes more, builds more heat, and fails faster.
The Warning Signs
- Low tread depth: Worn tires have less rubber to handle heat and are more likely to fail.
- Cracking or dry rot: Sacramento sun ages rubber. Cracks in the sidewall or tread are a serious warning.
- Bulges or blisters: A bulge means the internal structure is damaged. Replace immediately.
- Age: Tires older than six years are at higher risk regardless of tread, because the rubber degrades over time.
Pro Tip: Check your tire pressure when the tires are cold, ideally in the morning before driving. Pressure measured on a hot afternoon after freeway driving reads high and will fool you into thinking a low tire is fine.
How to Protect Your Tires in Summer
The single most important thing is correct tire pressure. A properly inflated tire runs cooler and is far less likely to fail. Check your pressure at least monthly and before any road trip, inspect for cracks and bulges, do not overload your vehicle, and replace tires that are worn or aged. If you are heading out on a summer trip, a quick inspection beforehand is cheap insurance.
When to Replace
Replace tires that are below safe tread depth, show cracking or bulges, or are more than six years old. Heading into a Sacramento summer on marginal tires is a gamble that is not worth taking with your family in the car.
